Around two in the morning last night I was startled awake by a huge, booming reverberation. My heart was racing as I jumped up trying to ascertain what had created such a loud, roaring sound. A few moments later, our bedroom filled with a flash of light as intense thunder howled through the silence of the early morning. I was overwhelmed by the force of the noise and blown away by its strength.
My chest was pounding as I thought about the jarring experience of being awoken by the rumble of thunder, such an uncommon occurrence in our area. The sound, though it quickly moved away, rung in my ears for about an hour and the mightiness of God filled my mind; I kept thinking about the voice of the Almighty being like thunder.
“At this my heart pounds and leaps from its place.
Listen! Listen to the roar of his voice, to the rumbling that comes from his mouth.
He unleashes his lightning beneath the whole heaven and sends it to the ends of the earth.
After that comes the sound of his roar; he thunders with his majestic voice. When his voice resounds, he holds nothing back.
God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding.”
—Job 37:1-5
These verses speak of the wisdom and omnipotence of God as experienced in the power of thunder and lightening. I felt that power acutely last night and found myself surrendering to him anew, longing to continually hear his thundering voice and see him move beyond my understanding. And ultimately, my thoughts were transfixed on the day when I “hear a voice like thunder say ‘Come!’” (Revelation 6:1)
I will gladly do so.
That WAS insane! I SO get what you were feeling! I kept hearing God remind me in His powerful voice that He loves me, that He is powerful and unpredictable.
The first few people I asked about it hadn’t even heard the noise, and I thought for a moment that maybe it was His private dialogue with me! "The God of Glory thunders" Psalm 29:3 I did a bit of research today (I am embarassed to admit I didn’t know what caused thunder). The LIGHT(ning) causes heat that creates the thunder. I wonder if our lights (John 5:16) are so shining in a way that we create awe inspiring booms that point others to Jesus?!
Amen! Even so, come, Lord Jesus! When He calls us, we will go with gladness.
Oh Christina~How powerful!!!!!
We can’t wait to hear HIS voice; feel HIS touch; and see HIS smile.Oh how sweet that day will be!!!!
Love and hugs~
